Way back when, the Greeks held the point that diamonds were the tears of the gods because of its physical properties that was out of this world. The Romans believed roughly the identical, only rather than being the tears from the gods they believed that diamonds were fragments of fallen stars.

Although prior to that there are already cases of betrothal gifts which involve diamond jewelry such as tiaras, brooches, and necklaces - that is the first case of the diamond ring being given upon an engagement.
Needless to say - the rest is history.
Today, the significance of diamonds in romance and engagement may be the predominant symbolism throughout the world. It carries a special meaning, and has potent emotional significance, but that does not mean that it couldn't one day symbolize something quite different once again.
